Date: 2012-04-06

THE weeklong sporting activities of the 13th editions of the West African University Games (WAUG) hosted by University of Ilorin will come to an end today (FRIDAY) at the university sports complex.

However, the quadrennial school sports events will end without cricket event due to non registration from participating schools for the event, a situation described as a bad omen for the games in its 47 years of existence.

Moreover, the games in which the host university featured in twelve sports events out of fourteen sports is expected to be declared close by President, Goodluck Jonathan who was represented at the opening ceremony by the Hon Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi while the Minister of Education, Prof Ruqayyatu Ahmed will also be in attendance.

In the same vein, the WAUG Games torch of unity that was lighted six days ago to signify the official commencement of the games in Unilorin that had over fifty universities from Nigeria and other parts of the West Africa sub region in attendance is to be quelled while the hosting flag of hosting will be handed over to the next host.

Meanwhile, WAUG officials the games were held hostage on Thursday by the officiating officials over the delayed in the payment of their services as some of the final matches slated for the early hours of the day were held suspense until the payment was effected.

Meanwhile, UNIVESRITY of Ilorin slogan "Better By Far" was put to a test on Thursday as activities at the 13th edition of West African University Games (WAUG) holding at University sports complex was disrupted by technical officials over nonpayment of their allowances just as the games ends today (Friday).

Tribunesports finding revealed that the school bursar who was saddled with the responsibility of effecting the payment failed in his bid hereby caused the strike actions embarked upon by the officials who traveled hundreds of kilometers to officiate at the games.

All efforts to convince the officials proved abortive according to information relayed to Tribunesports by reliable source within the local organizing committee of the games while explained that an emergency meeting of the LOC were quickly conveyed by the host vice chancellor, Prof Is-qah Oloyede to salvage the embarrassment meted to the university fondly called "Better By Far".

However, Tribunesports efforts to get information from the chairman of the LOC could not be met since the meeting was still holding as time of reporting.

Meanwhile, despite the non conclusion of other events, University still top the medals table having recorded a total of 33 gold, 16 silver and 9 bronze medals to lead other 53 universities taking part at the quadrennial games.
