Kwara LG poll: PDP members protest zoning of chairmanship post

Date: 2013-08-16

Hundreds of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in IIorin West Local Government area of Kwara State yesterday protested against the alleged zoning of chairmanship seat to Ajikobi Ward.

The protesters were mainly youths from Alanamu, Ubandawaki and Adewole wards of the local government area. The peaceful protest, which lasted for over four hours, kicked off from the secretariat of the party in Alanamu ward on Isale Aluko Street in the state capital.

The protesters, who carried various placards condemning the zoning, were led by the Chairman, Youth Associations in Ilorin Central Constituency, Alhaji AbdulFatai Ubandawaki.

While addressing journalists later, Ubandawaki described the party's decision to zone the chairmanship seat in the October 26 local government poll to Ajikobi Ward as a betrayal of trust.

According to him, Alanamu should be the next ward to produce the local government chairman in line with the rotational policy of the party. The protesters, however, handed over written copies of their grievances to the PDP Chairman of IIorin West Local Government, Alhaji Bala Olanrewaju, at the council secretariat at Agbooba Quarters.

Reacting to the protest, the state PDP Secretary, Mr. Yemi Afolayan, told journalists that the State Executive of the party had not received any news of a protest or a letter to the effect.

Afolayan said: "PDP is not having any anointed candidates in any of the local government areas. All candidates will test their popularity during the local government election."
