Bishop remanded over N6.3m fraud
The accused was said to have connived with two others, Prince Emeka Jeb and Chinenye Ihuoma both of No. 1, Eze-Adi Ezeadi, Imo State (now at large) to swindle the victim, Mr. Ajape Suberu of No. 4, Olorunshogo, Saw-Mail Area, Ilorin, Kwara State.
The accused had arraigned on a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, cheating, chriminal breach of trust and obtaining money under false pretence, which contradict Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences, Act Cap A6 Law of the Federation of Nigeria.
The victim alleged that on May 17 Prince Emeka criminally and his sister, Chinenye both at large met him in front of Cental Bank, Ilorin and intoduced themselves to be representatives of Beta Life Electronic Business Services, Alaba International Market, Lagos.
According to the victim, the suspects decieved him to be organising promo bonanza and collected N6,380,000 after which they promised to distribute electronics on or before June 27.
The victim stated further that since then the suspects were nowhere to be found.
Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that during the course of investigation at the State Intelligence Bureau, Nigeria Police, State Headquarters, Ilorin, the Bishop was arrested.
The prosecutor, Inspector Godwin Azua informed the court that investigation into the case was still ongoing with every effort to arrest other members of the syndicate now at large.
The prosecutor, however, objected to bail of the accused and urged the court to remand him in prison custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
The defence counsel, Barrister S.O. Ike, who prayed the court to admit the accused to bail pending the outcome of investigation, submitted that he would not jump bail if granted.
The trial magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Adeniyi refused the oral application of the defence and ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala, Ilorin until August 1 when the case would come up for further mention.
