Kwara Bars Colleges from Taking Loans, Illegal Courses
The Kwara State Executive Council has ordered the three colleges of education in the state to stop further recruitment and procurement of loans without recourse to the state government and their various councils.
The state Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Nurudeen Banu, in a post-executive council press briefing on Thursday, said the council also approved the recommendations that the colleges of education in Ilorin, Oro and Lafiagi should restrict themselves to only courses approved for the institutions.
He also asked them to pay all outstanding indebtedness before the end of the year and limit their accounts to only two banks, instead of the current alleged multiple bank accounts.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Communications, Dr. Muideen Akorede, added that the council also approved the establishment of Public-Private-Partnership Office as part of efforts to encourage investors, boost internally generated revenue and promote job creation in the state.
He said the kernel of the office of the PPP would be the engagement of private sector investors in key sectors of the state economy, particularly human capital development, economic development and infrastructure.
Akorede added that the council was of the view that “those states that would survive are those that would identify creative measures for generating additional revenue outside the dwindling federation account allocations.”
Meanwhile, Coalition of Graduands of Ekiti State University, in affiliation with the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, has raised the alarm over an alleged educational crises currently rocking Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin.
In a statement on Thursday by some members of the coalition, including Muritala Suleiman, Otitoju Amos; Sadiq Saheed, Oladokun Kehinde, Bakinde Jayeola, Owojori Adeyemi and Afolayan Joseph, it demanded a reduction in the “exorbitant” fees imposed on both the NCE students and regular degrees students.
It also demanded the immediate probe of all persons indicted by the White Paper Committee of Prof. Sheu Jimoh and the immediate appointment of substantive provost.
It also asked for an adequate implementation of the report of the White Paper Implementation committee.
“A country, where education is politicised and students are not well taken care of; a bizarre and unrest society is expected,” it said.
