UBEC/KWSUBEB: Kwara begins talent hunt with 11,000 basic school students
The Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWASUBEB) has begun a talent hunt for athletes that will represent the state in the next National Youth Games (NYG).
No fewer than 11, 000 pupils from primary and Junior Secondary Schools across the 16 local government areas of the state were mobilised and participated in the week long sporting activities including track and field events for school children which ended in Ilorin, the state capital on Thursday.
The championship was organised by KWSUBEB from the 2018 and 2019 UBEC/SUBEB sports intervention fund in collaboration with the Kwara State Sports Commission.
At the finals of the colourful events held at the main bowl Kwara State stadium , Ilorin , the state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq urged participants and their parents to embrace sporting activities.
Represented by the chairman, House of Assembly Committee on Education and Human Capital Development, Hon Mohammed Baba- Boriya, the governor said sports aparts from being a recommended activity for physical and mental fitness has also become a” means of living “.
In his remarks, the chairman KWASUBEB, Prof. Shehu Adaramaja said , “70 % of youths that represented the state in the last national youths games in Asaba, Delta State were our own students in SUBEB. What we are doing again is to discover another talent male and female that will represent Kwara in next National Youth Games (NYG)”.
He thanked the state governor for approving funds for provision of sporting equipment, training, camping, and feeding of the participants, which he said made the events successful.
At the end of the events , Ilorin West top the medal table with 25 holds , 5 silver and 2 bronze, Isin local government came second with 11 golds , 6 silvers and 2 bronze while Offa local government came third with 11 golds , 3 silvers and 1 bronze medals.
