Ajase-Ipo: Mother of 10 Fined N200 for Abandoning Day Old Baby

A woman, Salamatu Baba, 48 of Jimba Oja via Idofian, Kwara state has been sentenced to a six-month imprisonment, with an option of a N200 fine, for abandoning her day old baby in the bush.

The sentence was pronounced on her by an Ilorin Magistrate court before which she was arraigned for cruelty to child.

Police first information report informed that a complainant, Sarki Abubakar of Kara market, Ajase-Ipo reported at the police station that on September 30, the accused person delivered a baby boy in the bush opposite Kara market in Ajase-Ipo and abandoned him there.

The accused person was said to have been arrested two days later on October 3 at Kara market said she had 10 children consisting 9 males and a female for her divorced husband.

She, however pleaded guilty, saying that she was out of her mind to have committed the crime.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor handling the case, Inspector Kareem Jimoh prayed the court to proceed on summary trial of the case.

Ruling magistrate K.A Yahaya who presided over the case sentenced the accused person to a six-month imprisonment with an option of N200.00 fine.

She also ordered her to take the custody of the baby, breast feed him and be showing up with him at the end of every month.

Meanwhile, magistrate Yahaya ordered the first child of the accused person, Mr. Babangida to write an undertaking that the baby will be taken care of and will not be killed by the accused person.
