Town planners advocate new master plan for Kwara towns

Date: 2019-06-07

Nigerian Institute of Town Planners in Kwara State has called on the new administration in the state to prepare a new master plan for Ilorin and other major towns to avoid imminent disaster.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Wednesday to mark World Environment Day, the state chairman of the NITP, Tunde Olayioye said development in the Ilorin metropolis was haphazard.

The professional body, which said that the master plan currently being used for Ilorin was prepared 47 years ago, remarked that the development in the state capital was not being controlled, adding that, "everyone is just doing what they like because there's no master plan guiding development of Ilorin.

"Kwara State physical planning authority is doing its best, but there's no weapon with which to give a planned and orderly environment.

"What they are just doing there is to reduce effect of a planless environment. And when an environment is not planned, there's chaos. We have pollution because we don't have a planned environment; the refuse we generate cannot even be evacuated."
