Ilorin Airport counts loss over week-long blackout

Date: 2018-03-06

The Ilorin International Airport authority has counted its loss following the non supply of electricity to the airport for about a week by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The airport and its environs in Ilorin, Kwara State, were thrown into darkness from Friday 23rd of February to Friday 2nd March, without any formal explanation from the power distribution company.

Electricity was however restored to the area on Saturday at about 1pm. Pilot Aviation gathered that the airport pay a monthly bill of N2million for electricity consumption.

Speaking to this medium on the development, the Head of Corporate Affairs of Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Ilorin International Airport, Mr. Adeyeoluwa Oluwakayode said the situation affected the finances of the airport.

He however said the power situation did not affect operations at the airport, saying that the management put-up efforts to maintain the operational services. "It was an unfortunate development; there was no power supply to the airport for about a week.

We have spent hundreds of thousands of Naira to power the generator to keep the operations alive at the airport despite the blackout. " I cannot state precisely how much was spent running the power generating set, but we have to maintain the usual operational hours at the airport," he explained.

According to him, the management was at the IBEDC, Baboko District Office to find out what was responsible for the blackout but the officials were not forthcoming.

Other areas affected by the blackout include Gbagba, Airport/ Egbejila community, Check Point and Enyinkorin area.
