2015: Group Urges Kwara To Mop-Up Small Arms, Light Weapons
Kwara State government has been urged to commence immediate mop-up of all small arms and light weapons from the hands of miscreants in the state as the 2015 elections draw nearer.
The umbrella body of all socio-cultural groups in Ilorin, the state capital - Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressives Union (IEDPU) made the call in a communiqué it issued at the end of its security summit.
The union which expressed concern over the security situation in the state and in Ilorin metropolis in particular, also stressed the need for the government to block the sources of proliferation of such arms.
It also urged the security agencies in the state to ensure that they "block all sources of proliferation of these weapons in order to safe life and property of innocent people of Ilorin and its environs."
The communique which was read by IEDPU's national president, Alhaji Abdulhamid Adi warned that, "it is high time the security agencies to be more proactive in dealing with this security challenges."
The union added that, "a situation where crimes are committed with impunity must be tackled adding that, "no individual or group of people no matter how highly placed should be allowed to go unpunished with the commission of crimes."
While attributing the high crimes rate to the problem of youth unemployment, the IEDPU called on the state government to establish farm settlements so as to absorb trainees of farm vocational centers with the aim of boosting agricultural productivity which could be a foundation for industrial revolution of the state.
The union also recommended that, "the government should as a matter of urgency support National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) with surveillance gadgets and logistics and agency be encouraged to carry out routines raids on uncompleted buildings, known joints and hideouts of miscreants periodically so as to apprehend and bring to book those engaged in drug abuse and peddlers in Ilorin."
It said that, laws on sale of alcohol, consumption of hard drugs, gambling among others should be strictly enforced in the state in order to reduce the high rate of insecurity in the Ilorin metropolis.
The union enjoined religious leaders, traditionalists to continue to preach peace, love and friendly co-existence rather than instigating hatred, intolerance, confrontation and aiding and abetting heinous crimes.
