Date: 2014-03-31

Necessary policies that would enhance the success rate of the cash-less economy being driven by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to Governor Ahmed, the cash-less policy requires to be pursued, not mainly by the Central Bank but by the Federal Government with the deployment of necessary infrastructure, especially power while the Central Bank must evolve critical success factors for the policy.

Governor Ahmed who made the call when the Central Bank of Nigeria team on cash-less sensitization exercise visited him at the Government House, Ilorin, said with cash-less economy corruption would become the first victim as movement of cash and attendant tendencies for corruption will reduce critically.

The Governor suggested that the curricular of Banking and Finance programmes in the nation’s tertiary institutions must be restructured to meet current exigencies, rather than run courses that have no bearing with modern reality, saying that his administration has concluded plans to establish an office that will drive inclusive banking in the State with the appointment of a Special Assistant on Inclusive Banking.

In her address, the Acting Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Sarah Alade, represented by the Ilorin Branch Controller of the Bank, Mr Monday Olatewo said the cash-less policy would modernize Nigeria’s payment system, reduce cost of banking services and drive financial inclusion. She assured the Governor that the cash-less policy will become operational in Kwara State from July 1st this year.
