Vigilantes arraigned for robbery
Two persons, Abdulrahman Yusuf, 21 and Ismail Akanbi, 23 both of No. 44. Isale Asa. Opomalu, Ilorin, who claimed to be members of u vigilante group have been arraigned before an Ilorin Magistrate Court for allegedly involving in series of robbery incidents within Ilorin the Kwara State capital.
The court on a five-count charge of criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, mischief, robbery and being in possession of stolen handsels. The offences contravene Sections 97,248, 327,298 and 319 of Penal Code Law.
One Kehinde Olayide of No. 5, Asumara Lane, Balogun Fulani Area, Ilorin and seven others have indicted the accused at 'C' Division Police Station, Oja-Oba, Ilorin, that they and other members of their gang now at large robbed them complaint of their valuables.
According to the complainants, the accused inflicted body injuries, robbed them of their GSM handsets, money and other valuable items and also destroyed their properties.
Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that the investigation conducted at the State CID, Ilorin, revealed that the first accused, Iliasu Yinusa (now at large) criminally conspired wilh Ihe Iwo accused and one Taofek Mohammed wilh others now at large to rob the victims of their belongings.
The FIR added thai in the process of Ihe robbery the accused inflicted grievous body injuries on their persons, while others are at hospital receiving treatment.
The FIR also said that further investigalion revealed that some of Ihe stolen GSM handsets were recovered from the first accused (now at large), while a cut to seize axe and a kitchen knife were recovered from the accused.
The prosecutor, Inspector Adam Aliyu informed the court that investigation in to the matter is yet to the completed as every effort is still on going to re-arrest the first accused who escaped from the courtroom and others at large.
"He submitted that if the accused were granted bail they would jump bail, having realise the gravity of the alleged oll'ences and that it will be very difficult to arrest the others now at large. More so. they have abused the privilege been given to them by the police.
The defence counsel Barrister Tunde Abdul Gegele prayed the court to grant bail to the accused since they are still presumed innocent of the allegations under the provision of Section 36 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Magistrate Mahammed A. Ndakene refused the oral application for bail of the accused. He ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Medium Security Prison Mandala. Ilorin. until the next adjourned date.
The court adjourned the case till April J3. 2012 for further mention.
