Kwara approves N75m for fire service.

Date: 2014-05-07

The Kwara State government yesterday took steps to expand its Fire Service operation with the approval of N75million to construct two stations in Omu-Aran and Bode-Saadu areas of the state.

While the Omu-Aran office would gulp over N21million, a sum of N26million has been earmarked for that of Bode-Saadu, according to the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Dr. Amuda Kannike, whose ministry supervises the Fire Service.

He said the Fire Service headquarters which has been in existence since the colonial days would be renovated with over N11million. Also, two rapid fire intervention vehicles would be procured at the cost of N9.5million.

The commissioner told newsmen in Ilorin that a modern communication gadget would also be supplied and installed at the fire service units at the cost of N6.5million to enhance effective communication during disasters.

The contract for the renovation of the headquarters has already been awarded to a private firm by the ministry, Kannike said.

He said that as soon as the fire out-stations were completed in the two towns of Omu-Aran and Bode-Saadu, personnel would be recruited through the state Bridge Empowerment Scheme (KWABES).
