Ogundoyin Storms Ilorin, Rallies Governors' Support for Sweeping Constitutional Reforms
On Tuesday, 1 July 2025, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, conducted a strategic visit to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq of Kwara State, who also chairs the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF).
The visit aimed to bolster democratic institutions and advance constitutional reform across Nigeria.
Held in Ilorin, the high-level meeting focused on fostering collaboration between Nigeria's sub-national legislative and executive arms to promote transformative reforms, enhance legislative autonomy, and support constitutional amendments aligned with the nation's evolving governance needs.
Ogundoyin, who has spearheaded a number of reform initiatives since assuming the leadership of the Conference of Speakers, briefed the NGF Chairman on ongoing efforts to reposition State Houses of Assembly for greater autonomy, institutional effectiveness, and public accountability.
"We are committed to repositioning State Houses of Assembly to be more impactful, autonomous, and responsive to the needs of our people," Ogundoyin stated during the meeting.
"We believe that collaborating with the Nigeria Governors' Forum is critical to achieving these objectives."
He noted that the cooperation of state governors is pivotal to the success of the Conference's reform agenda. "We are not working in isolation. For meaningful change to happen, we need our Governors. Their partnership is crucial, and pivotal," he stressed.
Central to the conversation was the ongoing process of constitutional amendment. Ogundoyin emphasized the importance of harmonising the positions of the NGF and the Conference of Speakers to ensure the success of reform proposals that address Nigeria's federal structure and governance framework.
"We look forward to a united front on constitutional reform. This is a historic opportunity to reshape governance for the better, and collaboration between our two bodies is essential," he said.
"We need the Governors' Forum to support key legislative proposals such as devolution of power, fiscal federalism and State policing."
In response, Governor Abdulrasaq commended Ogundoyin for his proactive and unifying leadership of the Conference of Speakers.
He also reaffirmed the NGF's commitment to fostering collaboration with the legislative arm to deepen democratic values and institutions.
Earlier in the day, Ogundoyin visited the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu.
Both speakers exchanged views on strengthening inter-legislative cooperation and aligning state legislative priorities with broader national reform objectives.
