UNILORIN Plans to Sponsor 500 More Students for AI Training
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, has announced that the university has trained 21 students in Artificial Intelligence (AI) as part of its commitment to advancing education and innovation.
In a statement signed by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, and released in Ilorin on Sunday, Egbewole revealed that plans are in place to sponsor an additional 500 students for AI training.
He explained that the initiative aims to equip students with essential skills in AI, enabling them to explore and deploy innovative solutions for future career growth.
Egbewole emphasised that the university remains dedicated to promoting excellence in education and fostering community development.
He stated that the university currently runs a SMART Agenda, which emphasises the use of technology to enhance teaching, learning, and research.
�We have made significant strides in the area of Artificial Intelligence and have also invested heavily in digital infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art data centre and a robust network that supports online learning.
�With plans to establish a Centre for Artificial Intelligence already in advanced stage, the Centre for Cybersecurity and COMSIT are currently coordinating the AI endeavours of the University,� he said.
Speaking on the theme of the 2025 International Day of Education, �AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,� Egbewole described it as both timely and aligned with the university's progress in AI.
Egbewole said that the university recognised the critical role education plays in preparing future leaders to navigate the evolving landscape, adding that �our commitment is to equip our students with the knowledge and skills needed to harness the potentials of AI for societal progress.�
He added, �The trainings were aimed at encouraging the beneficiaries to acquire and expand needed skills in the exploration and deployment of Artificial Intelligence for innovations and future career progression.
