Police officer's son arrested for armed robbery, cultism

THE son of a serving female police officer in the ‘A’ Division of Kwara State Police Command has been arrested as a member of a five-man gang paraded for involvement in armed robbery/cult activities.

Speaking while parading the suspects at the police headquarters in Ilorin, the state police commissioner, Salihu Garba, said the command’s detectives, who acted on information, carried out a raid, at the suspected criminals hideout at Elekoyangan community in Ilorin, where the suspects were arrested on November 23, 2014 at about 5:30 pm. 

The police boss also said that the suspects had confessed to being the owners of exhibits found on them, which included one cut-to-size locally-made barrel gun, one automatic cigarette lighter pistol, two live cartridges, four wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, two cutlasses, a black schoolbag, one fire lighter and criminal charms.

He said they would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigation.

Also paraded was a 45-year-old male suspect, Akinola Obafemi, who was arrested for allegedly breaking into a textile shop at Oke Oyi area, Ilorin  to cart away 135 bundles of new ankara materials, eight bundles of new Guinea brocade, nine bundles of new lace materials, two bundles of new Kampala and two bundles of new Galila textile materials.

In an interview with journalists, the suspect said he did not know the items were stolen, adding that he only helped his lover of five months, who stole the items, to drive the car containing the stolen items.

The suspect, however, said that his lover took to her heels, leaving him to face the consequences of their criminal act.

The state police command also displayed arms and ammunition recovered in a spate of two weeks.

The police commissioner said the items were discovered at various criminal hideouts and from escaped criminals, adding that the items included two locally-made single barrel guns, six cut-to-size single barrel guns, four short locally-made double barrel guns, two single barrel guns, one automatic cigarette lighter pistol,14 live cartridges, one locally-made pistol, one Brownie pistol No CAL1661, and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
