Kwara State Ministry of Justice Law Officers Issue Seven-Day Strike Notice Over Unpaid Allowances

Date: 2026-07-24

Law officers in the Kwara State Ministry of Justice have issued a seven-day notice of an indefinite strike over the alleged non-payment of outstanding statutory allowances and the failure to harmonise their salaries and conditions of service with those of magistrates in the state judiciary.

The notice was issued by the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kwara State Chapter, in a letter dated July 20, 2026, and addressed to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The letter, signed by the association's Acting Chairman, Keyinde Ayorinde, and Secretary, Tolulope Oniyide, stated that the notice period commenced on July 20 and would expire on July 26, after which members would embark on an indefinite strike if their demands remained unresolved.

According to the association, several appeals have been made to the governor through the Office of the Head of Service, requesting the payment of outstanding statutory allowances and the implementation of the harmonisation of salaries and conditions of service, but no satisfactory action has been taken.

The law officers alleged that the government had remained unresponsive despite repeated representations.

They listed their outstanding entitlements to include the balance of the 50 per cent furniture allowance for 2020, as well as unpaid robe allowances for 2024, 2025 and 2026.

The association also demanded the implementation of the harmonisation of salaries, allowances and general conditions of service for state counsel with those of magistrates in the Kwara State Judiciary, in line with the approval granted in 2005.

According to the law officers, the demands relate directly to their welfare and the nature of their responsibilities, which they described as essential to the effective administration of justice and the smooth functioning of government.

They warned that failure to address the issues before the expiration of the notice would leave them with no option but to commence an indefinite strike.
