Kwara North APC Caucus Prioritises Insecurity Over Governorship Zoning Debate

Date: 2026-04-16

The Kwara North Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has urged elective political office seekers from the area to focus more on the worsening insecurity in the region rather than the zoning of the governorship seat to the area in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Wednesday, the Kwara North APC caucus, led by Hon. Benjamin Ezekiel Yisa, said that some political leaders from the region are more focused on governorship zoning and are less concerned about the deteriorating security situation.

Yisa, a former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, also berated the Tuesday mega rally in Ilorin organised by governorship aspirants from the district.

The caucus, during the programme, declared its support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu and Hon. Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa's governorship ambition in the 2027 general elections.

"It is quite unfortunate that while it remains our democratic right to seek political power, it is deeply troubling that the same level of coordination and urgency has not been deployed to address the worsening security situation in Kwara North.

"Insecurity has plagued the region for over three years now. Our people have not been sleeping with their two eyes closed. Kwara North has experienced relentless attacks from daredevil terrorists and bandits, resulting in loss of lives, mass abductions for ransom running into millions of Naira. Our people now seek refuge in neighbouring villages and communities.

"Yet there has not been serious coordination and agitation from desperate political leaders to call for government attention to deal decisively with this menace affecting our people. Rather, these individuals organised a mega rally to address the issue of the governorship seat shifting to Kwara North.

"It is on this basis that this press conference is organised to support Hon Bolarinwa. A leader that is caring, capable, and someone that has leadership experience and qualities."

Earlier, the Coordinator of the caucus, Luqman S Musa, said that "We wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from the recent press statements and hastily organised rallies by a few individuals claiming to speak for our region in support of the governorship aspiration of Kwara North.

"While we affirm our legitimate aspiration to see a governorship candidate emerge from Kwara North, we strongly emphasise that such ambition must not come at the expense of competence, independence, and the genuine capacity to deliver meaningful development.

"The ultimate objective of governance is not merely to produce a governor by origin, but to secure purposeful leadership that will uplift our region and the entire state."
