WAUG 2012: UNILORIN TO CONVERT FACILITIES TO CLASSROOMS

Date: 2012-04-03

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, has said that the facilities being used for the ongoing 13th West African University Games (WAUG) would be converted to classrooms for students of Human Kenethics and Physical Education in order to keep them in good condition.

While in a chat with Daily Sunsports in his office, the VC said converting the facilities into classroom use would help to keep them in good condition and save them from getting delapidated. He said that having seen the decaying condition of the Abuja National Stadium, he could not but wonder why such a facility that cost Nigeria so much would be allowed to waste away.

'I was in Abuja recently and what I saw of the Abuja National Stadium left me in shock. For a project that cost Nigeria so much to put up for the All Africa Games, which the country hosted in 2003 to be left to rot away makes me want to shed tears.

'It is for that reason that I want to convert the various facilities we've put in place here for the university into classrooms for us to be making use of them regularly. When you spend over N500 million to put structures in place and equip them for a game of this magnitude, it's only proper that it's put to use all the time; that way, it would not be left to rot.'

To make this a reality, the VC said he would ensure that those who are concerned with sports are brought close to the facilities so that they could see practically what they are studing. 'Our students in the Physical and Health Education and those studying Human Kenetics have a good opportunity now to be on the spot of what theyare working towards. That, for me, would give them a better opportunity to study and understand the issues in their field of study.'
