How flood destroyed N2bn agric project - Reps

Date: 2017-10-11

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to urgently assist communities ravaged by flood to ameliorate the hardships caused by loss of their crops and means of livelihood

The resolution is sequel to a motion moved by Ahmed Pategi (APC, Kwara).

Pategi noted that virtually all farm lands in Kwara State, including the Kwara State Tada-Shonga Agricultural Project which is being financed with a ?2 billion loan facility from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Anchor Borrowers Scheme, have been destroyed, along with fishing boats and farming equipment like tractors, portable generators, irrigation pumps

He however expressed concerns that most of the farm lands that were destroyed were already due for harvesting.

The House urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief and building materials to the affected communities.

It also requested the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to assist the affected communities with tractors, implements and other agro inputs to position them towards the next planting season.

The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara mandated the Committees on Water Resources, Appropriations, and Agricultural Production and Services to ensure implementation of the resolution.
