Group Seeks Legislation On Use Of Local Languages In Kwara Schools
The Kwara State House of Assembly has been asked to enact relevant laws that would support and ensure implementation of the use of local languages in the early years of education of the children.
The coordinator, North Central zone, Civil Society Action Coalition on Education For All (CSACEFA), Hajiya Nimat Labaika, stated this in Ilorin while briefing newsmen on "Preferred language of instruction in schools and uneven distribution and redeployment of teachers."
She stressed the need for policies that would encourage the employment of qualified indigenes as teachers from the rural communities where the schools are located, and that one teacher who could speak the local language be posted to each of the nomadic schools in the state.
Labaika also advocated the need for language policies which would ensure that early education is carried out in the local languages to ensure children become literate in their first languages to promote better understanding in the teaching and learning process.
According to her, such policy should specify that newly recruited teachers must stay for a minimum of two years and a maximum of five years in any school they are posted to.
She also advocated the absorption of teachers employed by SBMCs/PTAs who possess relevant qualifications in most of the rural schools be done to fill the existing gaps since the teachers live within the communities where those schools are located.
"Kwara state should follow the example set in other countries that have succeeded in the recruitment and deployment of teachers in rural areas through adequate provision of major amenities that will make life better for them in the rural schools," she added.
