Kwara to build 10,000 houses

Date: 2012-05-31

Provision of decent shelter, which has long been a major national challenge, may soon become a thing of the past in Kwara State as the state government is to partner with Stylotec Concrete Industries, Netherlands, for the construction of 10,000 affordable housing units over a four-year period.

The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, who made this known at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the firm in Ilorin on Tuesday, said that the housing scheme, with a capital outlay of $450 million in housing delivery and $15 million in infrastructure development, has the capacity to deliver 15 housing units per day.

The governor explained that this projection was achievable due to the new technology to be employed for the scheme.

Ahmed also said that the housing scheme will enhance the actualisation of his administration’s Shared Prosperity Programme as clinics would now be built in good time for the 500 metres access to good healthcare by the people of the state.

"The beauty of the scheme," according to the governor, "is that the core investors have a window that will ensure that Kwarans have access to mortgage loans to buy the houses."

The President of Stylotec Concrete Industries, George Lamar, said the projection of 10,000 housing units in four years is achievable because of the modern technology that would be employed.

Lamar noted that the Kwara State environment is conducive for the housing initiative because the state government has business friendly policies.
