Director General advises property owners in Kwara State to embrace new land charges
The Director General (DG) of the State Bureau of Land, Barrister Kamaldeen Ajibade, made the call while speaking on an NTA programme, 'Morning Safari'.
Barrister Ajibade explained that the gesture was part of efforts by the State Government to boost its internally generated revenue needed to ensure the provision of infrastructural facilities to improve the standard of living of the generality of the people.
He said the land charge, which is payable once in a year replaces the old system of annual ground rent, adding that demand notice will soon be issued to property owners whose buildings are on untitled land.
The DG said a special court has been put in place to check any would be defaulters.
Ajibade said under the law, failure to respond to demand notice within 45 days would attract 5 percent increase, between 46 and 105 days, 15 percent while refusal to pay between 106 and 135 days attracts 30 percent increase.
For property owners that refuse to respond to demand notice between 136 and 180 days, 50 percent increase would be paid and anyone above 180 days would attract 100 percent increase.
