Concerns over low pace of PVC collection in Kwara

Date: 2015-02-26

There have been concerns over low turnout of prospective voters to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) in Kwara State, Daily Trust reports.

Recently, some prospective voters protested to the commission's office along Western Reservoir road Adewole to register their displeasure over the absence of ad-hoc staff at their polling centres.

However, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Emmanuel Onucheyo debunked the allegation that ad-hoc staff were not available, saying that people were not coming to collect their PVCs.

It would be recalled that the commissioner, during a voters' sensitisation programme held on January 22, 2015, disclosed that the commission has distributed 69 per cent of PVCs in the state. However, a month after, the figure only rose to 72 percent, fuelling concern over slow distribution of the cards.

INEC officials at the collection centres complained to the INEC national commissioner in charge of Kogi, Niger and Kwara states, Dr. Chris Ihemogha, who visited the state weekend, saying only few people came to collect their cards.

INEC's deputy director, Voters' Education and Enlightenment in the state, Barrister Jacob Iyanda, lamented that many card owners refused to pick their cards, saying the distribution was not fast.
