Gbemi Saraki set to declare for governor
Daughter of Second Republic Senate Leader, Olusola Saraki; Senator Gbemisola Saraki is set to declare her interest to contest the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State, Daily Trust learnt.
Gbemi, by the time she declares, would be slugging it out with more than 10 other aspirants eyeing the PDP ticket.
Daily Trust gathered from sources in the Gbemisola Rukayyat Saraki (GRS) Movement that the former Senator who represented Kwara Central between 2003 and 2011 would declare early next month.
Her aides say consultations by the Senator have gone far preparatory to the declaration.
Daily Trust correspondent observed that for the past two months, the younger sister of former Governor Bukola Saraki who is the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, has remained in Kwara, meeting and soliciting people’s support on her ambition.
It would be recalled that she was the candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) in the 2011 governorship election. Her father floated the party for Gbemi to realise her governorship ambition but she was defeated by incumbent Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed who was then in the PDP.
However, Gbemi has enlivened her aspiration after publicly declaring for PDP almost immediately after her brother dumped the PDP for APC.
To actualize the ambition, Gbemi, it was gathered, has met with key stakeholders in Kwara, cutting across the traditional institutions, religious groupings, youths and women groups across the 193 wards of the state, the inner caucus of her father's structures, among others.
She recently paid a private visit to the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Zulu Gambari.
"These consultations which have been fruitful would now be capped up by declaration any moment from now", added the source.
