534 new polling units allocated to Kwara - INEC
Out of the 30,027 polling units the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) planned to introduce across the country, 534 polling units would be allocated to Kwara State.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO), INEC Kwara State office, Barrister Jacob Ayanda, who disclosed this to National Pilot on Tuesday, in Ilorin, added that the new polling units are in addition to the already existing 1,872, which put the total number polling units in the state at 2,406.
He said in the state just like any other states, a framework had been given by the commission while the electoral Commissioner in the state had inaugurated a committee to study the framework to give advice appropriately.
"The objective of the Independent National Electoral Commission is to make voting easy by de-congesting the polling units. In some of the polling units we have about 1,000 to 1,500 and in fact, 2,000 in some places. If the voters must vote and be able to complete their voting at the appropriate time without much problem, there is the need to provide more polling units and that is what prompted the commission in striving to introduce these additional units".
"At the state level, when we finish our own work we will submit to the headquarters and from there, the commission will return the list to the Federal level but by and large, the Resident Electoral Commissioner has also instituted the committee to advice the state appropriately", he said.
Ayanda commended the commission for facilitating the framework at an early stage which he said would enable the eligible voters to observe their civic rights without fear or favour.
He urged Kwarans to utilize the opportunity in the forthcoming general elections as it would upgrade the electoral processes and make it a credible one.
