Kwara varsity floats School of Tourism, Events Management

The Kwara State University, Malete, has unveiled its newly established School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management (STHEM) to explore the business potentials in the fields of tourism and managements of events.

The new school, which would offer relevant courses and programmes in tourism, would train and prepare students for business opportunities in the fields "to gain extensive knowledge in the fundamentals of business administration applicable to global service sector."

Addressing newsmen in Ilorin, vice chancellor of the university, Professor Abdulrasheed Na'Allah, said tourism, as well as hospitality and events management, were huge areas providing employment for graduates.

Na'Allah added, "So our goal is develop excellence in pedagogue, business and research in tourism, hospitality and events management.

"Built on the curricula cornerstones of resort management, environmental tourism, events management, and cultural and heritage tourism, courses will equip students with knowledge, skills and experience in managing the tourism, hospitality or event for the benefit of the traveller, the host, the event participant and the supporting industry."

The VC noted that graduates would be employed in commercial, private and public organisations and in a wide variety of jobs and many geographic or business settings.

"The school is the result of thorough research into other programmes worldwide and what would fit the Nigerian market. The new school will respond to the needs to provide a high-level, professional education in business administration. It is also designed to meet the growing need for the next generation of business leaders in the rapidly growing tourism, hospitality and events management industry," he added.
