Yusuf Ali Recommends Six-year Single Term for Political Office Holders
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mallam Yusuf Ali, yesterday canvassed for the adoption of a six-year single term for all political office holders in the country.
He said such system would go a long way in reducing the current tension among the political office holders over the issue of second term bid.
Ali, who spoke with journalists in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, yesterday in his office at a reception organised in honour of one of the members of the chambers, Mr. Bolakale Ajanaku, who was elevated as an Area Court Judge by the state government said: "For any serious political office holders, a six-year single term is enough for him or her to add values to the socio well being of those who elected them into office."
According to him, "The six-year single term is more desirable for all political office holders than seeking to re-contest for another four years after the end of the tenure of first term of four years in office.
“The current wave of second term in office among the political office holders is uncalled for because some of them have failed to improve the lot of the masses and going back for second term will not produce anything again for the masses.
"Six years are enough for any political office holder to prove determined efforts aimed at executing development. More so, it is between the two options of two-term of eight years and single term of four years."
Ali, who said the fight against corruption in the country would be won when Nigerians, individually and collectively exhibit zero- tolerance for corruption, added that people should join hands in the fight.
Speaking on the prevalent insurgency in some parts of the country, the legal icon charged the federal government to be more proactive in addressing the issue, adding that the problem persisted because of poor intelligence gathering among nation's security operatives.
He also charged the new Appeal Court judge to be honest, uphold the fear of God and promote the ideals of the judiciary, Islam and young Nigeria generation.
Ali also enjoined the people, particularly family and friends of the new judge not to serve as obstacle to his success by encouraging him to be upright without undue interference.
In his remarks, the new Area Court Judge, Mr. Bolakale Ajanaku, assured the people that he would be upright and steadfast in the dispensation of justice.
He, however, lauded Ali for organising the send-off for him, promising him to be a good ambassador of the Ghalib Chambers.
