Congress divides APC in Baruten
All Progressives Congress, APC, in the Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State yesterday witnessed deadlock in its congress.
The party members, who gathered at the LGEA Primary, Kosubosu, in the headquarters of the local government, could not resolve on candidates and modalities for the election.
While some agreed that the old executive members should continue, other sought for another set of candidates.
Speaking with the newsmen, the state party official, Alhaji Ibrahim Koto, said the congress was inclusive because members could not agree on some issues.
He said, “They did not agree to the term of agreement to have new executive. Some maintained that the old executive should continue, while other said they should be changed.
“So we are going back to Ilorin to inform our leaders of what has happened, because we don’t want a situation where our people fight one another because of elective post.”
Meanwhile, a source, who preferred anonymity, said that members were against a new list brought from Ilorin as new executives
“They should give a level playing ground to vote instead of forcing us to reach consensus on candidates we don’t want,” he said.
The party wards’ chairmen in the council also agreed that the old leadership should continue if peace was to reign in the party.
Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the eleven wards’ chairmen, Alhaji Salihu Sise said all the chairmen that emerged from last Saturday’s congress agreed that the old leaders should continue in office.
However, the chairman of the local government, Mallam Mohammed Umar-Bio, and the member of the House of Representatives representing Baruten/Kaiama constituency, Hon. Zakari Mohammed, declined comment on the outcome of the congress.
