Quit notice to fellow Nigerians illegal, says lawyer

Date: 2021-01-30

An Ibadan-based lawyer Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) has said no Nigerian has the right to issue quit notice to another Nigerian from his place of residence.

He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to do the needful on the issue that prompted the recent quit notice threat to some individuals of certain ethnic groups resident in parts of the country.

Fagbemi spoke on the sidelines of the public presentation of a book in Ilorin, Kwara state capital.

The book is entitled "History and Development of Judiciary in Kwara state" in honour of the late pioneer Chief Judge of the state, Justice Saidu Kawu.

A Principal Area Court Judge at the Upper Area Court One, Ilorin, Mr Ahmad Abdulyakeen, authored the book, which drew eminent Nigerians including former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isa Ayo Salami; Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Sulyman Durosinlorun Kawu; former Grand Kadi of the state, Justice Salihu Oloruntoyin Muhammad; Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede; Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, and a front line legal practitioner, Mallam Yusuf Ola-Olu Ali, SAN among others.

Fagbemi urged Buhari to take the bull by the horn and address the issue that gave rise to the recent quit notice threat in the interest of the citizenry.

But the legal luminary was convinced the quit threat would linger if nothing was done to put a stop to it.

Fagbemi also urged the Federal Government to provide an enabling environment for the citizens to conduct their affairs without becoming a threat to one another.

"What is happening is the effect of a fundamental cause and you do not deal with the effect in order to cure the cause; something caused it.

"That was not the first time such a call (quit notice) will come. It has come before. Remember the threat to (Bishop) Matthew Kukah that he should leave a particular place.

"Let us address the real issue. The real issue is that the President should take the bull by the horn and do the needful instead of saying is it right; we all know it is not right. But it started from somewhere. If unchecked, it would continue to grow in leaps and bounds.

"However, no one has the right to call for the ejection or removal of anybody from any place. However, let there be an enabling environment for everybody to play his role," Fagbemi said.
